Whale Song is our newest large-scale production, which launched on June 7th at Port Macquarie’s 2024 Artwalk.

Whale Song is a multimedia outdoor theatre procession that celebrates the humpback whale migration season. The show includes video projection, giant illuminated puppets, and community creature creations, all led by a moving soundscape embedded within our puppets. During the event local community and audience participants are invited into the show; through both workshops prior to our performance, and invitation to join in our moving parade.

We were thrilled about our return to Port Macquarie ArtWalk and Newcastle New Annual which signified our official launch of Whale Song.

Touring

We are excited to announce that Whale Song will be available for touring in 2025-2026. Watch this space!

Newcastle New Annual 2024

This phenomenal evening of large-scale whales performing on Newcastle beach saw an amazing audience of 2,000 in attendance. Curious Legends collaborated with local artists to provide workshops on the day to add to the overall experience of Whale Song.

Culture & Painting with Worimi community- Auntie Debbie Dates held workshops that built connection to her work “The Pelican Project” through storytelling and art. Auntie Debbie’s artistic process draws parallels between her family, the stories of her life growing up as a Worimi woman and her connection to the land, sea and its creatures. The workshop invited participants to learn traditional linealist painting skills, and create their own personal work to take home. Between Auntie Deb’s painting workshops Auntie Jodi and Auntie Tammy will also lead cultural activities based on language, song and marine science.

Crafting and Puppetry- Participants were invited to create their own jellyfish puppet and learn the wonderment of bringing their puppet to life through play and physical theatre. These participants were then invited to become a part of the performance alongside whales, seaweed and remora fish.

Community Choir- Christopher Sutherland and Naomi Dart of Petrichor Play Choir invite the community to learn the live choir parts featured in our show, and enjoy the connection and fun of singing with a community choir.

A huge thank you to our funding partners for Whale Song: Create NSW, Port Macquarie Hastings Council, and City of Newcastle.
